BRČKO – The European Union is providing €8.3 million to clear mines from more than five million square metres of land along the Sava River in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project will help make riverbank areas safe for communities and prepare the ground for better transport connections.
Funded through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), the works will cover 73 locations. Contracts were signed in Brčko on 29 September 2026.
Removing mines is an essential first step towards improving navigation and enabling further investment along the Sava. It follows the recently completed modernisation of the Port of Brčko, supported by the EU and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
For people and businesses, these investments can bring safer access to land, more reliable movement of goods and new economic opportunities. The Sava connects Bosnia and Herzegovina with Croatia, Serbia and, through the Danube, wider European markets.
The priority now is to complete mine clearance safely, paving the way for improvements to the waterway and stronger connections between river, port and rail transport.
