Road Safety Campaign Launched in Montenegro

Bar, 4 July 2022 – Regional campaign “It’s a Thin Line” aiming to increase the safety of intersections of railways and roads in the Western Balkans was launched today in Montenegro by the Transport Community Permanent Secretariat, Montenegrin Ministry of Capital Investments and the EU Delegation.

“Although they represent a small percentage of road crashes, the severity of collisions at railway crossings is often high compared to other crashes. 59% result in fatalities and severe injuries! I am pleased that we have full support of the Ministry and the EU Delegation to jointly tackle this issue. By joining forces, coordinating our actions and having a region-wide approach to increase public awareness, we can decrease the number of accidents on rail level crossings towards the “Vision Zero” by 2050,”Director Zakonjšek said.

In the EU, 44 road deaths per million inhabitants were recorded in 2021, representing a 5% increase compared to 2020, but a 13% decrease compared to 2019, prior to the pandemic. These statistics are worse in the Western Balkans. This is why the Transport Community is supporting its six regional partners to improve the infrastructure, procure safety equipment and install proper signaling on level crossings in the region.

Public awareness campaign “It’s a Thin Line” includes animated videos, flyers for drivers and students, and a video currently being shown on TV stations in Montenegro. The campaign targets a wider audience via animated videos, dedicated events and printed materials. It is part of “soft” measures to raise awareness of all participants in traffic about the dangers of improper crossing of road/rail intersections.
