Belgrade, 9 December – The Polish Road Transport Inspection, the Embassy of Poland to Serbia and the Transport Community demonstrated today the importance of roadside checks, as essential element of road safety at the tolling station Vrčin, close to Belgrade.

“These kinds of inspections allow us to identify and remove from traffic the vehicles that are malfunctioning, as well as detect drivers and operators who do not possess the appropriate qualifications and documents. In order for this system to work, we need well-trained inspectors and thorough checks of vehicles. All this is done with a clear goal in mind – properly performed inspections save lives. While striving for “Vision Zero”, we must do whatever it takes to ensure that trucks and buses on our roads are safe and they do not endanger lives of passengers and drivers,” Matej Zakonjšek, Director of the Transport Community Permanent Secretariat stated.

Roadside inspection in Vrčin was organised as part of the three-day training in road transport-related topics. The training was developed for road transport professionals from the regional participants of the Transport Community – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia. Participants from the ministries in charge of transport, interior, road transport inspections, police, road authorities and road transport departments learned about the European Union transport policies and regulations.

“We need a holistic approach to road safety, improvements in the design of roads and vehicles, and better laws and their implementation. The Polish inspection team that is taking part in today’s practical demonstration, provided invaluable training on EU legislation and I would like to thank them for their cooperation. Let us now focus implementing the laws on roadside checks, including the social legislation. We need to show zero tolerance for faulty inspection procedures in order to make our roads safer and save lives,” Zakonjšek said.
