LUXEMBOURG – Railway experts and representatives from the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Moldova and Türkiye gathered in Luxembourg on 13–15 October 2026 for a three-day training on the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The training focused on how a common European approach to railway signalling can support safer, more efficient train journeys across borders.
Organised in cooperation with the Transport Community and the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA), the training was supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Luxembourg’s national railway company, CFL – Passenger Rail Operations.
ERTMS brings together common systems for railway signalling, speed supervision and communication between trains and the track. Its introduction helps railways move towards shared European standards, making it easier for trains to operate across national networks.
Through sessions led by ERA experts, participants explored how the system works, the EU rules governing its use and the steps needed to introduce it. Discussions also covered the evolution of railway signalling and how equipment is assessed and approved.
The EIB shared its experience in financing railway projects involving ERTMS, while a technical visit hosted by CFL connected the classroom discussions with everyday passenger railway operations.
By combining technical knowledge, practical experience and financing perspectives, the training supported participants in preparing for the modernisation of their railway systems. The Transport Community remains committed to helping its partners strengthen skills and advance European railway standards, contributing to safer and better-connected rail services for passengers and businesses.
