CHIȘINĂU – The Republic of Moldova is on the right track in modernising its transport system with the first workshop dedicated to shaping the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Strategy organised by the Permanent Secretariat of the Transport Community with the EU funding.
Held on 18 and 19 June in Chișinău, the two-day workshop brought together representatives from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, the Permanent Secretariat of the Transport Community, consultants, and various transport stakeholders. The goal: to create a shared vision and clear objectives for improving how people and goods move across Moldova using smart, digital solutions.
The workshop opened with remarks from State Secretary, Mr Nicolai Mîndra, representatives of the Permanent Secretariat of the Transport Community, and consultants engaged in the technical assistance within which the workshop has been organised. Participants then took part in a series of interactive sessions, covering the current state of Moldova’s transport systems, challenges, and opportunities.
During the first day, focus was placed on understanding where Moldova stands today. Sectoral groups worked on identifying the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of ITS across different transport modes such as road, rail, air, and waterways. Stakeholders also discussed their needs and priorities to ensure the future strategy reflects real on-the-ground concerns.
The second day moved from analysis to action. The groups helped shape the mission and vision of the future ITS Strategy and proposed specific objectives to guide its implementation. Participants also looked at how to measure progress by developing key performance indicators and monitoring tools.
The workshop concluded with a discussion of the next steps, including continued engagement of all stakeholders and expert support throughout the strategy’s development.
The ITS Strategy aims to improve traffic safety, reduce travel time, make transport more efficient, and align Moldova’s systems with European Union standards. As the Moldova continues its path towards EU integration, smarter and more connected transport will be key to ensuring sustainable growth and better mobility for all its citizens.
BACKGROUND
Launched in December 2024, the Transport Community’s largest technical assistance for the Republic of Moldova aims to assist the authorities in preparing Moldova’s National ITS Strategy. By implementing the strategy, Moldova will enhance road safety, reduce congestion, and boost transparency in transport operations.
This assistance is financed by the European Union under the grant NDICI-GEO-NEAR/2023/452688 to the Permanent Secretariat of the Transport Community related to preparatory activities to support the progressive involvement of Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine in the activities of the Transport Community.
