BELGRADE – A round table dedicated to the “Challenges for the Western Balkans’ Road Transport Carriers and Ways Forward” took place today at the Belgrade Fair, as part of the Truck Fair and Serbian Carriers’ Day 2025.

The event brought together representatives of road hauliers’ associations, chambers of commerce, transport ministries, and relevant authorities from across the Western Balkans, as well as representatives of EU Member States’ embassies, with the aim of addressing key obstacles faced by carriers and exploring practical solutions to improve the sector.

The discussion was opened by Mr Neđo Mandić, Director of the Serbian Association of International Road Hauliers “MT”, and Ms Ljupka Siljanoska, Deputy Director of the Permanent Secretariat of the Transport Community. Both underlined the importance of regional cooperation and European integration in building a more efficient and competitive road transport system.

“We are very aware of the pressing issues faced by road carriers, particularly regarding the Schengen rules, which have become even more prominent with the upcoming implementation of the Entry-Exit System. While TCT has limited influence in this area, as it falls under the exclusive remit of the European Commission and EU Member States, we remain committed to passing your arguments and concerns to the European Commission and facilitating your coordination efforts at the regional level,” Ms Siljanoska underlined in her opening remarks.

The discussion focused on transport facilitation measures to overcome challenges in cross-border operations and to harmonise practices with EU standards. Mr Aleksandar Spasić, Secretary General of “MT”, set the scene with an introductory presentation, followed by interventions from regional stakeholders. Discussions highlighted practical bottlenecks, such as border procedures, infrastructure gaps, and administrative barriers, while also identifying opportunities to strengthen cooperation between carriers, institutions, and international partners.

Closing remarks stressed the urgency of continuing reforms, implementing joint measures, and ensuring that the voice of carriers is heard in shaping regional and European transport policies.

The round table was followed by the official opening of the Truck Fair, showcasing innovation, equipment, and services that support the industry’s growth.
