SARAJEVO – Over two days, the Permanent Secretariat of the Transport Community gathered rail experts, and policymakers to strengthen cooperation and plan the future of the region’s railways.

The 25th Technical Committee on Railways, held on 3 September 2025, brought together partners from the region and the European Union to look at how rail transport can become faster, safer, and more reliable. Participants reviewed the progress made under the Next Generation Rail Action Plan, discussed a draft report on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) for the Western Balkans, and set the calendar for important rail events in 2025.

The following day, on 4 September 2025, the 8th Railway Infrastructure Managers Network Meeting focused on practical cooperation between those who run the region’s rail infrastructure. Highlights included the presentation of the Final Report on the Regional Rail Centre of Excellence, a case study on track access charges in Serbia, and final presentation of an addendum on resilience to the Memorandum of Understanding of the Railway Infrastructure Managers Network.

Both meetings underline a simple but important message: stronger rail connections mean better opportunities for people and businesses. By working together, the Western Balkans and the EU are laying the tracks for a more connected, sustainable, and competitive future.
