TIRANA – On 10 February 2026, the Transport Community held its 26th Technical Committee on Railways meeting in Tirana, bringing together railway experts and officials from the Western Balkans, observing partners, and EU institutions.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport, the European Union Agency for Railways, national authorities, and regional partners.
Participants reviewed how regional partners and observing participants are aligning their railway systems with EU rules and how they are putting the New Generation Rail Action Plan into practice. They also discussed what kind of technical support is needed to help improve safety, efficiency, and service quality.
A special session was dedicated to observing partners from Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine who shared updates on their progress in applying common railway standards and developing key transport projects linked to the European transport network.
The committee also reviewed the latest report on major railway corridors in the Western Balkans, highlighting priorities for investment and modernisation. In addition, participants agreed on the main activities and events planned for 2026, in close cooperation with European partners.
The participants visited the construction site of the Tirana–Durrës railway line, hosted by Albanian Railways. The visit gave participants a closer look at one of Albania’s most important railway projects and its role in improving regional connectivity.
The meeting reconfirmed the shared commitment of all partners to work together on building safer, more reliable, and better connected railways across the region.
Participation of observing participants was financed by the European Union under the grant NDICI-GEO-NEAR/2023/452688 to the Permanent Secretariat of the Transport Community, supporting preparatory activities for the progressive involvement of Georgia, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine in the activities of the Transport Community.
